As a Washington D.C. photographer, one of the things I love most about this city is the incredible history and variety of locations it offers for photo sessions. Whether you’re planning family photos, celebrating an upcoming graduation, or preparing for a military event, Washington, D.C. has no shortage of beautiful historical landmarks. When choosing the perfect location for your session, it’s important to consider the overall vibe you want, how much walking is involved, parking accessibility, time of day, and crowds. Luckily, there are so many amazing spots throughout the city that offer something for everyone!
Capturing portraits with the iconic D.C monuments in the background is really special. Many families, especially military families, want to remember their time in D.C., and the National Mall is the perfect spot for that. The Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, WWII Memorial, and Tidal Basin are each incredibly impressive in their own right. The Washington Monument is arguably one of the most recognizable Washington, D.C. landmarks, second to the White House. Luckily, it is tall enough to be seen from many locations throughout D.C., and it can be fun to set up sessions with a little peak at the Washington Monument in the background.
The National Mall can get tricky with crowds and parking, so this should be taken into consideration when planning your D.C. photo sessions. Because of this, I always recommend weekday sunrise sessions. The early morning light is beautiful, temperatures are a little cooler (crucial for those super warm spring and summer months!), and the crowds are minimal. It truly feels magical having these iconic spaces mostly to ourselves in the early mornings! Weekend mornings can also work, but evenings tend to get too crowded.
The Jefferson Memorial is a highly requested location for photos in Washington, D.C., and for good reason. Parking is much easier and there isn’t ongoing construction like there tends to be closer to the heart of The National Mall. The white marble architecture, columns, and views of the Tidal Basin and Washington Monument create a timeless backdrop for photos. The Tidal Basin photographs well year-round, but is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season. Between the water views, walking paths, and iconic architecture, this area always works well for family sessions, senior portraits, and military sessions alike.
Constitution Gardens is a bit slower and quieter, while still keeping the Washington Monument nearby. When booking sessions in Washington, D.C., many clients want to keep the Washington Monument in view, as it’s arguably the most identifiable monument in D.C. The Constitution Gardens offer just that, while also providing a more natural setting than The National Mall. The greenery, walking paths, and open water make sessions feel a little more relaxed compared to the more heavily trafficked monument areas. During the spring, Constitution Gardens becomes even more special for graduation and senior photos. With everything blooming and coming back to life, it feels like the perfect setting for celebrating growth.
The DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) portico is an incredible hidden gem in Washington, D.C. The archways, magnolia trees, and the way the Washington Monument peaks through the pillars give this location such a classic feel. It is especially beautiful in the spring when the magnolias are blooming. This location is so versatile, giving a formal and timeless feel, while also providing space for more candid and relaxed moments throughout a session.
Cherry blossom season in Washington, D.C. is worth every bit of the hype it gets! But planning and timing are everything. Peak bloom is fleeting and changes every year depending on the weather. The crowds can also be overwhelming, but sunrise sessions are one hundred percent worth the wakeup call! While the Tidal Basin is the most well-known and populated cherry blossom location, there are several quieter areas throughout D.C. that offer equally beautiful views with fewer crowds. Sometimes those little hidden gems end up being the most magical backdrops!
