Best Locations for Photos in Alexandria, VA | Alexandria & Northern Virginia Photographer

As an Alexandria photographer, one of the things I love most about this wonderful city is the variety and character it offers for photo sessions.Whether you’re planning family photos, senior portraits, or a military event, Alexandria has so many incredible locations to choose from and you really can’t go wrong! When deciding where to plan your photo session, consider the purpose of the session, the vibe you’re aiming for, and how much walking is required.

Fort Hunt Park

Fort Hunt Park is a hidden gem in Alexandria. With its vast open green lawns and large, shady trees, it’s a perfect spot for family photos in Alexandria. Kids can run around and feel comfortable, and these make for some fun, personality-filled photos. The wide-open spaces provide easy walking and flexibility for both posed and candid shots, and the natural setting provides a beautiful backdrop for the changing seasons. Parking is easy and the park is usually quiet, so you don’t have to worry about crowds interfering with your session.

Old Town Alexandria

Old Town Alexandria is a classic photo session favorite for a reason. It’s packed with character and offers such a wide variety of backdrops. Brick sidewalks, alleyways, waterfront locations, and even a charming park. Old Town really has it all and there is something for every style here. Sunrise sessions are ideal, as it can get pretty busy during the day. Some of my favorite spots in Old Town include Founders Park, Windmill Hill Park, and S. Fairfax St/Prince St. Old Town is perfect for senior pictures in Alexandria, or a family session with a more charming urban vibe.

Mount Vernon Grist Mill

If you’re looking for a location with both history and charm, Mount Vernon Grist Mill is a great choice! The historic mill is packed with the charm and history that Alexandria is known for. The stone walls and beautiful landscaping work together to add a storybook feel to any session. This is another great natural setting for family photos in Alexandria. Since tourists pay for tickets and tours, it’s best to schedule your session right before the mill closes as it’s not as busy during that time.

Green Spring Gardens

Green Spring Gardens is a beautiful location that is wonderful to visit year-round. From spring blooms to vibrant green summers and stunning fall colors, this location offers endless possibilities. They even have a gazebo and a historic house, providing perfect backdrops for family or senior photos in Alexandria. The gardens are free to visit, though a permit is required for photographers to help manage the crowds during peak seasons.

Bon Air Rose Garden

Ok, so this location is in Arlington, VA, but it deserved a special shoutout! Bon Air Rose Garden stands apart as a classic garden backdrop with its brick walkways, arches, and 120 varieties of roses. It’s a popular location for its well-kept grounds and accessibility to the parking lot. No permit is required, making it an easy option for spontaneous sessions. The gardens offer such a vibrant, colorful backdrop that is especially fun for senior photos.
