I love the military tradition of honoring a service member’s dedication with a military retirement ceremony. It’s so special to witness the pride and joy from family and fellow service members as they gather to celebrate the retiree and all of their accomplishments. As a military photographer, I feel honored to have the opportunity to document the guest of honor talking about their time in service, the people they served with, and the journey that brought them here!
Being a photographer in Washington, D.C. is so surreal. Getting to capture family and military memories at some of the most iconic locations in the nation’s capital is something I never take for granted.
This retirement ceremony took place at the Military Women’s Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, an architectural landmark within one of the country’s most historic and recognizable cemeteries. Arlington National Cemetery is such a surreal place, honoring generations of service members and their sacrifices. The Military Women’s Memorial is dedicated to recognizing the service of women in the military. With its beautiful arching design, water fountain, and views of the cemetery, it provides such a beautiful and meaningful setting for a retirement ceremony.
Like all other military ceremonies, military retirement ceremonies are filled with meaningful traditions. Some of the most special moments include the opportunity for the guest of honor to reflect on their years of service, the folding of the American flag, and the reading of the poem Old Glory. Each part of the ceremony is so very special and unique, and I feel so honored to be able to capture these memories.
