Every milestone deserves to be preserved and remembered. From Washington D.C.’s iconic cherry blossoms, to meaningful running route landmarks, and celebrating years of hard work and dedication, this session had it all! “H” never had formal high school senior photos taken, so she really wanted to mark this special milestone. She is preparing to graduate with her law degree, so this session was a great way to document this season of her life and celebrate everything she has accomplished.
As a northern Virginia family and senior photographer, this is honestly one of the things I love most about my job! Stepping into these moments with people and helping them preserve these moments in time is so important to me. It never feels like “just photos” to me. It’s all about the story behind them!
The morning of H’s graduation session was one of those gorgeous Washington, D.C. mornings. It just so happened to be PEAK BLOSSOM DAY! The warm light, beautiful blooms, and mild weather made the PERFECT backdrop for this meaningful session.
H wanted to begin her session at Constitution Gardens and the surrounding areas. The Constitution Gardens hold a special place for her, as it’s part of the route she runs almost every morning before heading off to classes at George Washington University. There’s something so special about photographing someone in places that are already part of their everyday life. It immediately makes the session feel more authentic. We’re not just taking pretty pictures, we’re documenting her true journey.
After some time at the Constitution Gardens, we made our way to a patch of cherry trees near the Washington Monument. It was absolutely beautiful, and surprisingly quiet. While it seemed that most people were gathered at the Tidal Basin to view the cherry blossoms, this spot was like a little secret garden in the middle of the city. The lack of crowds and the soft pink tones against the monument views set us up for some beautiful timeless photos for H’s graduation portraits.
We finished H’s session at DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) building, which was the perfect final spot. It had everything we needed to round out her session: pillars, a beautiful portico, more Washington Monument views, and a saucer magnolia tree.
Each location added a different layer to her session, from soft and natural to historic and posed. We even got some shots with her regalia to really document this exciting time in her life. I hope to see H again soon! She is an absolute delight to photograph. Truly beautiful inside and out!
