Life is always so full this time of year. Between holiday sessions, kids’ activities, and hosting family, my calendar as an Alexandria family photographer fills up quickly! And somehow my own family ends up last on the list. I wasn’t able to get it together to take photos of my own kids last year- and I’m still kicking myself! We recently had a small window of opportunity on a Saturday morning before my daughter’s swim meet, and I jumped on it!
It wasn’t elaborate or perfectly planned, just a quick, meaningful moment to document my own kids the same way I document every other Alexandria family I photograph. It was simple, honest, and captured exactly who they are in this season.
There is a small row of trees near our neighborhood in Fort Hunt, Alexandria that I thought would be the perfect spot. It was really chilly, but we made it happen. And I’m so glad we did! Between the much needed warmth and the natural light filtering through the trees, we were extra grateful for the sunshine on this beautiful morning.
As a family photographer, I’m always scouting out little pockets of beauty like this. Quiet neighborhood spots and simple poses that feel natural and authentic. The soft winter light streaming through the trees made everything glow, and reminded me that you don’t need an elaborate location for beautiful family photos. Sometimes home is the best backdrop.
At 13 and 14 years old, it can be challenging sometimes to get my kids to smile naturally. Photographing teenagers is a whole different ballgame than chasing toddlers. You can’t force it or fake it- sometimes natural smiles take a little creativity! Luckily fart jokes still do the trick in our house, and I’m grateful that my kids are still giggly at times.
These are the moments I love the most, both as a mom and as a photographer. The real laughter and personalities that are so them. Because a few years from now, we’ll be able to look back on these and remember them exactly as they were at this stage. And for that I’m so grateful!
